Karen Baas

“For me, entering into the landscape begins with slowing down and looking closely. Observation becomes a doorway. I watch the rhythms, follow the patterns, feel the textures, and remain open to what emerges. As my pace changes, so does my attention. Curiosity draws me closer; openness allows me to receive what the landscape reveals. I might notice the pathway of wind, the curve of a leaf vein, ripples carrying light across water, or warmth held within a rock. The longer I look, the more the landscape reveals unexpected complexity, quiet tensions, and echoes of things we know and feel. The natural world can touch what we recognize within ourselves. Photography offers me a different way of being, one in which attention replaces urgency and I can move with, rather than against, the rhythms of the natural world. It gives me space to wander, linger, and become absorbed in noticing. I hope to translate these moments of discovery into photographs that invite a closer look, images that feel intimate, contemplative, and slightly unexpected. My photographs offer a place to pause and enter the landscape with me. I may guide your attention toward what drew me in, but what you discover there is yours.”
